Jack

I had no idea what inspired Viktor’s begrudging Christmas spirit, but he’d found it somewhere and dragged it out, kicking and screaming. I glanced over before pressing play on our movie, and the look on his face was not unlike that of a man about to be led to the gallows.

Viktor was an enigma. I had so many questions to ask him—before we even got to the antlered ruminant in the room. I had to force myself not to interrogate him last night, after he’d mentioned his family. Telling me the reason behind his hatred of all things Christmas had felt…important. It felt like something he didn’t share too often. I was determined to answer his gesture in kind, and give him something cozy and warm and comforting to hang onto when he dwelled on this time of year in the future. Halfway through the movie, though—I knew something was wrong. I didn’t know if it was this movie, specifically, or if it was all Christmas movies, or me, or what, but Viktor was tense as a bowstring. I was afraid to even glance in his direction in case he snapped.

A few more minutes of this and I finally gave in. I paused the movie and looked over at Viktor. His jaw clenched so tight I was afraid his teeth would crack, and I was horrified to see that he had big, fat tears spilling out over his cheeks to roll silently down his face. “Wha—?”

He let out a tiny gasp of breath, before turning to see me looking. The sob that broke free was half a snarl, and he jerked away, knuckling angrily at his eyes and swinging his legs off the mattress.

“Viktor…” I said, resting a palm on his shoulder, but he flinched at my touch and lurched to his feet, unsteady, and hobbled toward the door.

I set my computer aside and got up to follow him. Despite his injured leg, he had a bit of a head start on me, and he seemed determined to escape any probing questions, so I jogged a few steps to catch up with him just as he tossed the front door open.

About a cubic yard of snow spilled in through the open door. “What the hell are you doing?” I asked him, teeth chattering as the cold punched its way inside.

“I’m just going to go,” he said.

“Are you crazy? It’s a blizzard out there.”

“I’ll transform,” he said wildly, tossing his head to avoid looking me in the eye. “The cold won’t bother me.”

“Viktor,” I said, annoyed. I grabbed his arm, holding fast when he tried to twist out of my grip. I tugged him back inside. The snow was already melting into the welcome mat, but that could wait.

“I’ll make you miserable. Just let me go,” he begged. “I was supposed to be alone. I should be alone—”

Viktor still wouldn’t look me in the eye, so I did the only thing I could think of. I grabbed his cheeks in both hands and pulled him in for a fast, hard kiss.
